This Weekend: Lots of Fun for All Ages from the San Fernando Valley to Downtown to Santa Monica

FRIDAY

NATIONAL DOUGHNUT DAY: It’s the first Friday in June so that means it’s National Doughnut Day (a.k.a. donut). Little known trivia fact — the day actually started in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army to help those in need and honors the Salvation Army “Lassies” who first served doughnuts to soldiers during WorldWar I.  Krispy Kreme, Dunkin’ Donuts, Stan’s Donuts, K’s Donut Emporium and Fonuts are among the Los Angeles doughnut shops giving away free doughnuts today. CELEBRATE LA:  It’s the ultimate street festival to mark the culmination of the City’s Annual Heritage Months.featuring a wide range of entertainment and activities reflecting the culture and diversity of Los Angeles. Tonight’s event from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. will include live music, performances, food trucks, free nachos, celebrity chef cooking demonstrations, and interactive workshops and games. Former President Bill Clinton will pay tribute to Mayor Villaraigosa and welcome the incoming Mayor, Eric Garcetti. The main stage will showcase performances by Grammy-winning artist Pepe Aguilar, the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, and Seville, as well as highlights from previous Heritage Month Celebrations, including the Plaza de la Raza Mariachis, A Place Called Home Jazz Ensemble, Sangeet Shplang Ensemble, and the United American Indian Involvement Pow Wow Style Drumming. Plus a special appearances by  Ryan Seacrest and Plácido Domingo, who will be performing later Friday evening at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Grand Park is easily accessible by Metro Red Line to Civic Center station. Parking and bike valet are available.

Free Dance Lessons at Galleria Live!Head down to the Sherman Oaks Galleria for free dance lessons with Arthur Murray Sherman Oaks. It’s happening the first Friday of every month at 8:45 p.m.

The Girls in the Band:  A very special documentary about women in jazz opens tonight at the Noho 7 and runs through June 13. The film tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating , groundbreaking journeys from the late 30′s to the present day. These incredibly talented women endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today a new breed of gifted young women is taking their rightful place in the world of jazz which can no longer deny their talent.

LA PRIDE:  This annual three day festival and parade  in West Hollywood draws more than 500,000 people.  Festival $18–$20; other events vary. Check out the  website for complete event schedule. Parade, Santa Monica Boulevard between Crescent Heights and Robertson boulevards, West Hollywood.

The CONTEMPORARY CRAFTS MARKET: This one-of-a-kind functional and decorative crafts show is back today through Sunday at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. The market will feature the distinctive works of over 250 of the nation’s finest artists and craftspeople, ranging from intricate jewelry, unique glassware and ceramics to hand-painted textiles, custom furniture, mixed-media creations and much more. All items on display and for sale have been jury-selected.

SATURDAY

FREE MOVIE AT BEEMAN PARK:  The Studio City Neighborhood Council is sponsoring this free movie night from 7:30 p.m.- 10:30 p.m. with a screening of Back to the Future starting at around 8 p.m.  Bring a picnic basket or buy refreshments at the snack bar.  The next movie Despicable Me on June 22. MUSIC AT BOB’S ESPRESSO BAR: Actress/singer Kathleen Wilhoite will be at Bob’s Espresso Bar  in Noho at 8 p.m. Enjoy Bob’s specialty coffee and snack on yummy sweets courtesy of Portos. $12 cover. 5251 Lankershim Blvd. North Hollywood.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

JUBILEE MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL: It’s a two-day sampling of emerging and touring musicians, authors, visual artists and comedians in Downtown L.A.’s arts district. Enjoy listening to 40 plus local and nationally touring bands and musicians; Comedy curated by Iliza Shlesinger; Literature presented by PEN Center USA, featuring LA’s best poet, David Shook. There will be over 20 food trucks and vendors, over 40 arts and crafts booths, and sample sales. A two-day pass is $50 and will help support the Los Angeles Arts & Athletics Alliance’s mission to promote a lifelong engagement with the arts. Doors open at 3 p.m. both days. LA WINEFEST:  It’s Los Angeles’ largest wine festival with ver 500 wines, brews and spirits from around the world. The Fest also offers local celebrity chef demos, live entertainment, fun seminars centered around wine and food, plus some of LA’s most popular food trucks, boutiques, festival merchandise and more. Saturday, 2 p.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday, noon-5 p.m. Raleigh Studios, 5300 Melrose Ave. Hollywood.

SPRUCE UP: Thinking of new landscape, got a brown thumb or want to conserve water? Attend the Drought Resistant Plant Festival and Plant Sale presented by the Los Angeles Cactus and Succulent Society. Includes hands-on workshops, landscape exhibits and plant vendors plus a great deal sale to get you started. The event is FREE. CONCERTS ON THE GREEN : It’s a Beach Party  this Sunday at Woodland Hills’ Warner Center Park with Surfin’ Safari belting out Beach Boys classics. Pack a picnic and bring a blanket. Dogs must be on a leash and no alcohol or barbecuing allowed in the park. 5800 Topanga Blvd. Woodland Hills.
